Every year, we recruit hundreds of students who want learn how to ballroom dance. Most of the people who join have no dancing experience. The team, along with our professional coaches, will teach you to dance from the very first step. You don't need a partner to start.
You’ll be part of a team that offers scholarships, reaches out to the community, and wins inter-collegiate competitions throughout the year.

FALL 2010 RECRUITMENT HAS BEGUN! FREE Welcome Week Lessons!
What's better than free dance lessons? During the recruitment season our team gives away 5 free Latin and Ballroom dance lessons to get you moving. We teach at least two dances each Welcome Week event (including the Cha Cha, Swing, Salsa/Mambo, Foxtrot, Tango), and at the CCRB on Saturdays our world-class professional coaches Steve and Susan McFerran teach 3 dances in 2 hours. The free events alone will teach you a TON of ballroom dancing skills that will last a lifetime. We encourage everyone to come and check us out. No partner or experience necessary!

Noodles Night: Thursday, September 10th, 4-9pm
UMBDT has become a partner with Noodles and Co. and will host a School Kick-Off Benefit's Night on September 10th, 2009. We'll be dancing both inside and outside the restaurant, playing ballroom music, spreading ballroom love, and taking over the restuarant. New and interested members are highly encouraged to come. You can meet some team members, dance with tons of people, and sign up to join the team. We encourage everyone to show up, it's gonna be a blast!
Update: It was a blast. We maxed out the restaurant, had dancers putting on shows out front on the sidewalk, and jammed the upstairs with dance lessons and upper-level team members dancing with and teaching newcomers.
Fall BBQ 2009: Friday, 9-25-09, 5:30-9:30pm
The Fall BBQ is a social event hosted to connect new team members with current team members. There's nothing like FREE hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, music, and night volleyball to bring people together and make new friends. Hosted once a year, and funded 100% by the Ballroom Team. Come over, meet some new people, and plug yourself into our community!
Winter Workshop: February 7th, 4-8pm in Michigan Union
Once a semester, the Team offers a ballroom workshop for the Ann Arbor and student communities. This is an aspiring dancer's best opportunity to learn a variety of fun, social, and/or competitive dances, all at the same place. Not only can you learn your favorite dance(s), you'll have the opportunity to get to know a ton of your team mates.
When the days lose hours and the weather turns sour, the UMBDT heads indoors for a fun night of ice skating at Yost Arena. Usually taking place mid-way through the Fall Semester, the Ice Skating Social offers everyone a much-needed break from long sessions of studying. Once again, we encourage new and interested members of the Ballroom Team to come and meet everyone! We pay for your admission. Bring your skates or $2 for rentals.
Competitions are one of the best team bonding experiences of all. The team travels several times a semester to Ohio, Indiana and other states in order to compete against other collegiate ballroom programs throughout the country. Competing against hundreds of other newcomers like yourself, cheering on your fellow team mates, and representing your University is truly an unforgettable experience. The friends you make both at Michigan and other Big Ten schools will last a lifetime.
Several times a semester, the Ballroom Dance Club puts on a party for members of the community. The Club provides a venue, music and refreshments, the Team provides showcases, and everyone has a great time. Some highlights are the annual Halloween Party (who doesn't love dancing with someone in a giant panda suit?), beach party themes, 20's flappers, and St. Patrick's Day dancing.
Holiday parties are always a blast with the UMBDT! Every year one (or more) of our team members hosts a halloween party. Additionally, we often celebrate Thanksgiving together for those that can't make it home for the holidays.
Every semester the UMBDT has a party to celebrate the friends we've made and our competitive accomplishments. Every year we plan new and creative activities for our party. It's a great way to wrap up a semester's worth of hard work for all of our dancers.
